Vassilis Spanoulis is the new head coach of AS Monaco, signing a contract until 2026 with an option for another year, the club announced. He’s succeeding Sasa Obradovic who was fired earlier in November.
A EuroLeague legend and three-time Final Four MVP as player, Spanoulis will be making his coaching debut in the competition with Monaco. His first two games with the team will actually take place against his former EuroLeague clubs: Panathinaikos Athens on Friday (29/11) and Olympiacos Piraeus (4/12).
Spanoulis, also the current head coach of the Greek national team, spent 2022 to 2024 at the helm of Peristeri Athens. The team made Basketball Champions League Final Four of 2024 and was named Coach of the Year.
In 2021, Spanoulis retired from basketball after spending 11 years with Olympiacos. During this run, he led the Piraeus side to the back-to-back EuroLeague championships of 2012 and 2013 along with multiple domestic trophies. He was named Final Four MVP in 2012 and 2013, along with season MVP during the latter year.
Spanoulis established himself in the EuroLeague with Panathinaikos, before making his move to archrival Olympiacos in 2010. With the Greens, he won the 2009 EuroLeague title, claiming his first Final Four MVP award.
During his EuroLeague career, Spanoulis was named to the All First Team in 2012, 2013 and 2015 while making the Second Team in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2018. He holds the all-time record for All-EuroLeague Team nods.
