Misko Ražnatović on EuroLeague FFP: “If they restrict salaries, players will go somewhere else”

EuroLeague announced prior to the 2024/25 season a revamped version of the Financial Fair Play rules that includes financial penalties for those overspending.

Talking about that subject, basketball agent Misko Ražnatović is clearly against a version of a salary cap in European basketball.

There is a salary cap in the NBA, FFP in football competitions, and UEFA, and they want to do the same, but they don’t understand that this is not the same. Players in the NBA are at the top competition level, and they have nowhere to go. In football, it’s the same. Here, if they restrict player salaries, players will try to go somewhere else. Japan is growing, China might return, Australia… What’s the reason to reduce the salary of the players? I don’t see what we are getting,Ražnatović said to Skweek.

He believes it will have a bad impact.

Competition, even without a salary cap, is very equal. All the teams are more or less similar, and you don’t know who will win. It’s not like someone spending 50 million is automatically the best by far, and others who make five million are bad. I’m against this rule, and I think it will have a negative impact in the future.”

Ražnatović adds that the players are not fond of the idea as well.

It’s not logical, because EuroLeague teams will probably have more income. Right now, EuroLeague doesn’t make really good money because of the contract signed with IMG nine years ago, but by 2026, they expect much better contracts, and interest in EuroLeague is increasing. Everybody expects much more money. So, clubs will have more money, but they will not be allowed to spend it on players due to financial limitations or penalties if they spend more money. I’m not a politician or a specialist in this, but from what I hear from the players, nobody likes this idea,” Misko Ražnatović concluded.
