Real Madrid sends condolences to Sergio Scariolo for his loss

Real Madrid sent condolences for the death of Sergio Scariolo’s mother, Angelina Caia.

Per the press release: “Real Madrid C. F., its president and Board of Directors are deeply saddened by the passing of Angelina Caia, the mother of our dear national team coach Sergio Scariolo.

Real Madrid wishes to extend its condolences and support to her family and loved ones. May she rest in peace.”

The Italian tactician worked for Los Blancos between 1999 and 2002.

Beyond more jobs with ACB teams, his connection with Spain was furthered as the selector of the national team of the country from 2009 to 2012 and since 2015. He is connected to the best era in the country’s history with success piling up a silver medal in the 2012 Olympic Games and bronze in 2016, besides winning the 2019 FIBA World Cup and capturing four EuroBasket gold medals.

The Brescia native has been the head coach in 315 games of the top-tier continental European league, from the 1990-91 edition of the FIBA European Champions Cup to the 2022-23 installment of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. Besides three years with Madrid, he coached Virtus Segafredo Bologna, Laboral Kutxa, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, Khimki, Unicaja, Tau Ceramica, Teamsystem Bologna, and Scavolini Pesaro.

Beyond a long career in the Old Continent, Scariolo worked as an assistant coach under Nick Nurse at the Toronto Raptors from 2018 to 2021. His efforts were highlighted by winning the NBA championship in 2019.
