Real Madrid coach Chus Mateo confirmed that the club is nearing a deal with NBA guard Dennis Smtih Jr. to bring the player in the Europe for the first time in his career.

“He is not yet a member of the squad, when it becomes official, hopefully soon, we will talk about him,” Mateo said when asked about the reported looming deal with Smith after Real Madrid’s 116 – 113 EuroLeague win over Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Real Madrid had been looking to make a quality addition to its backcourt lineup during the last couple of months. The Blancos have now improved to 12-9 in the EuroLeague thanks to a 5-0 streak that helped them recover from a struggling stretch back in November/December.

Smith, the 9th overall pick of 2017, last played in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets in 2023-24, averaging 6.6 points, 3.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 56 games.
