Olympiacos Piraeus swingman Evan Fournier delivered a EuroLeague season-high of 28 points on 5-8 triples to lead his team past Real Madrid 96 – 86 on the road.
Fournier went off in the second half with nine points in the end of the third period, including back-to-back threes to put Olympiacos up 73 – 54. He continued in the same tempo hitting another 3-pointer as his team took a 81 – 61 advantage with 6:37 remaining.
“You’re always trying to prepare for those games and you always to prepare for every game,” Fournier said to EuroLeague TV in the post-game flash interview. “Sometimes, depending on the match up and what they’re doing, you have more opportunities. Always trying to be aggressive but also make the right play. Tonight ended up being like that.”
Thanks to the win over Real Madrid, Olympiacos finished the double-game week and the Spain road trip with two wins, since they also beat Baskonia on Tuesday (14/1). Fournier was pleased with how the Reds performed overall to continue leading the standings, now at 16 – 6 after seven wins in a row.
“That was a hell of a week for us,” Fournier commented. “We came in with the mentality of the underdog. Real Madrid is playing well. They have a really good defense and is always tough to play against them.” The Spanish powerhouse had six consecutive victories before facing Olympiacos.
“When we have that spirit, that mindset and that fight, this is when we play our best. It’s a great effort,” Fournier also said.
