Winters in Lithuania can get really cold. But not enough for Andreas Obst, who had flaming hands in Bayern Munich’s 97-82 road win against Zalgiris Kaunas.
Already recording a 34-point night with 11/16 from three-point range earlier this season against Barcelona, he had four consecutive threes in the fourth, finishing with 26 points over 8/12 from deep.
Carsen Edwards, who entered the EuroLeague Round 24 as this season’s third-best scorer, finished right after with 24 points. “The Basketball gods rewarded us. All of us are trying to chip in and do ways to help us win,” he commented. Overall, Bayern shot 17/32 from beyond the arc.
Nick Weiler-Babb was also crucial with one of his all-around nights for the Bavarians. The American-German guard had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and a career high of 13 assists, shooting 4/4 from three.
“We just took the punches they threw at us, but we stuck together as a team. I felt good, it’s always good when guys like Carsen and Andi are making open shots. I’m happy to distribute and contribute to my team,” the German playmaker added.
Sylvain Francisco, who played in Munich in the 2023-24 EuroLeague Regular Season, scored 32 points against his former team, a new career high that wasn’t enough to give the win to another former Bayern representative like Andrea Trinchieri.
After this win, the German team has a solid 14-10 record and remains on a post-season course, while Zalgiris lost a step and dropped to 11-13.
Andreas Obst sealed the deal in Kaunas
Gordon Herbert’s team created separation midway through the second period after an 8-0 scoring run, eventually taking a 16-point lead (45-29) heading to the locker room.
Laurynas Birutis reacted for Zalgiris with 8:08 on the clock in the third quarter, delivering a 2+1 play with a poster dunk, inspiring the home side to trim the lead to 10 points (47-37) after not playing a single minute in the first half.
However, Andreas Obst’s back-to-back threes entering the fourth quarter gave Bayern space to breathe once again, extending the lead back to 16 points (77-61). The German sharp-shooter then added two more daggers, sealing the deal for Bayern Munich’s road victory.
This was Zalgiris’ third straight loss in the EuroLeague. They were coming off two road defeats against Fenerbahce and Panathinaikos. Next week, they will host ALBA Berlin and Milan in double-game action.
Bayern Munich, instead, continued their winning streak after getting the upper hand in the German derby on the road against ALBA Berlin. In the double-game week, Gordon Herbert’s team will also play in back-to-back fashion at home, first against Milan and then hosting ASVEL.
