Partizan president critical of EuroLeague multiyear license terms for his club

Partizan Belgrade president Ostoja Mijailovic criticized the fact that the club was asked to pay a large amount of money to EuroLeague Basketball to get a multiyear license without receiving any revenue from TV rights and marketing in return.

“I believe that the decision-makers regarding the commercial conditions for Partizan have in mind that we have to take care of our own income and the sustainibility of this project for years to come,” Mijailovic said to Kurir. “It sounds unrealistic to me that we’re paying millions for the contract and, as one of the most watched and popular clubs in Europe, we don’t have any compensation for TV and marketing rights.”

Mijailovic is hopeful that Partizan will soon officially secure a license that will guarantee them a EuroLeague spot for the next years. As of now, the team competes in the EuroLeague via annual wildcard, the same as Crvena Zvezda, the other Serbian powerhouse and Partizan’s archrival.

According to a recent report by Meridian, both Zvezda and Partizan were offered longterm licences for a multimillion-dollar membership fee.

“At the meeting with the president and director of the EuroLeague, our work or system with a clear financial picture that is crystal clear was assessed as an excellent partner of the EuroLeague,” said Mijailovic. “These were the preconditions for what awaits us, which is a multiyear contract with the EuroLeague.”
