EuroLeague CEO Paulius Motiejūnas commented on the discussions around the potential creation of an NBA Europe league, arguing that this isn’t something needed right now.

“We have a strong league. We have a great plan. We have a vision as to where we want to go and what we want to do. Of course, we don’t need another league. We don’t need a savior,” Motiejūnas said to Spanish broadcaster Movistar+ while attending the EuroLeague game between Real Madrid and Paris Basketball in Spain.

We keep saying that we have the best league in Europe. I think we have the best fanbase on which the league is built. We have great franchises like Real Madrid. We have new names like Paris coming in as a new market. Clearly, we feel strong.”

Last week, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis held a joint press conference announcing their intentions to explore the creation of an NBA Europe league. EuroLeague, the top competition outside the NBA and the championship where the biggest European clubs participate, wasn’t mentioned at all in the presser.

“This big noise about it [NBA Europe] is not helping,” Motiejūnas added. “I think the only way is for us to work together. We should care about filling these big arenas, providing the best product. That should be the focus of everybody. Not trying to create some buzz that’s disturbing the product we have.”

Motiejūnas was also asked about the participation status of Dubai BC, Crvena Zvezda, and Partizan for the next season.

“Dubai is a new market,” Motiejūnas mentioned. “They wanted to come in last year. We need to be creative and see how we can spread the values and #EveryGameMatters outside of Europe. There are great teams…  There are two Serbian teams. There are so many names I can mention that want to come in the EuroLeague. Our job is to talk to all of them. To see the conditions and what would be the best option. Do we go to 20 teams next season? Do we stay with 18? We will have to see”.
