The EuroLeague Board meeting on Monday was expected to be important regardless; however, it may end up being huge for the future of the sport in Europe.
As Eurohoops sources confirm, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis and FIBA Europe President Jorge Garbajosa will meet remotely and present their case to avoid a new schism in European basketball, with EuroLeague having the NBA Europe project as a rival.
FIBA took the initiative to contact the EuroLeague in continuation to what Zagklis said during the joint press conference with NBA commissioner Adam Silver about FIBA being open to every basketball stakeholder.
However, it remains hard to predict the outcome of the meeting. Per Eurohoops sources, Garbajosa was also present in the last meeting between the EuroLeague, the NBA, and FIBA, which didn’t produce any result.
With that being said, this meeting may end up being one of the last chances for European basketball to stay united and also add the NBA to its ecosystem without friction.
The last word belongs to the clubs-shareholders which will have to hear FIBA’s case, present theirs, and make their move
