Real Madrid had a good start to the game, leading 25-15 after 10 minutes, but lost their step in the final quarter. Olympiacos took matters into its hands, turned the score around, and won.

Therefore, the Piraeus team is now leading 2-0 in the EuroLeague Playoffs before the series moves to Madrid and has a chance to punch its Final Four ticket in the third match.

Real Madrid’s head coach, Chus Mateo, shared his thoughts at the post-game conference, not wanting to talk about officiating or try to find excuses.

I’m the head coach of Real Madrid’s basketball team, and in my club, we don’t complain, never after the game, about injuries, referees, or whatever is outside the game. During the game, we are going to fight, and we will complain to referees if we believe there’s a bad call. I believe in the honesty of the referees, and we will never complain about the referees after the game. Never! People outside can say whatever they want, but once the game is finished, I’m never going to complain about what happened on the court,” Mateo said.

He insists he is proud of his team’s effort despite the loss.

It was a different game today. We tried to fight until the end, and I’m proud of my players because they tried their best from the beginning of the game. Sometimes, with more success on offense, sometimes not so much, but we fought until the end, and I’m proud of the heart of my team. It’s not easy to win here, we know that. The atmosphere is amazing, and in front of us, we had the champions of the regular season. We tried our best, and in some moments, we believed we could win, but it’s a game of 40 minutes, and Olympiacos deserved to win today.”

Real Madrid knows how to turn things around when down 0-2 in the EuroLeague Playoffs, as they did with Chus Mateo on the bench during the 2022/23 season, taking down Partizan after losing the first two games at home.

They even went on to win the whole thing, defeating Olympiacos in the final.

We have to keep believing until the end; we are going to fight. In Real Madrid, there is a saying: ‘Until the end, let’s go, we can do it, until the last second.’ So, we are not going to stop. I thought we could win, but there were some bad offenses, two turnovers, and we couldn’t fight until the last second. But we are going to do it in Madrid,” Mateo concluded.
