Olympiacos’ history against Valencia
Olympiacos achieved a victory in the fifth round of the EuroLeague, overcoming an incredible comeback from a 28-point deficit to defeat Valencia after overtime with a score of 102-97.
It seemed all but over, and Valencia was on track for their fifth win of the season when the hosts led by 28 points (62-34) after a three-pointer at the start of the third quarter.
However, a shocking turnaround by the visitors followed. Olympiacos, without their head coach Georgios Bartzokas, who was ejected, chipped away at the Spaniards’ lead and managed to erase it entirely before the end of regulation, thanks to a masterful performance by Evan Fournier.
Olympiacos had a 90-88 lead, but TJ Shorts leveled the score for the hosts with six seconds to go, and after Jean Montero’s miss, the game went into an additional five minutes.
In overtime, Olympiacos pulled ahead by five points (100-95), but drama ensued once more. After Fournier’s miss, the referees initially ruled that the shot clock had expired, but after reviewing the footage, they saw that the ball had grazed the rim and awarded possession to Olympiacos, despite neither team having control of the ball. After that, there was no return for the hosts, and Olympiacos secured a historic win.
Jean Montero scored 26 points for Olympiacos, Evan Fournier added 21, and Sasha Vezenkov contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. On the other side, Nikola Mirotic scored 19 points, and TJ Shorts had 16, along with five assists.
