Less than one month ago, Baskonia guaranteed Sito Alonso’s contract for the upcoming season. But, in what might be characterized as “turn of events”, it seems that the two sides won’t move forward together.
According to EL MUNDO, Baskonia informed Alonso that he won’t be head coach next season. So far the decision has only been announced to him verbally but a written confirmation is expected soon.
The contract that Sito Alonso signed last summer when he joined the Basques was for a “1+1” duration and the option for 2017/2018 was activated shortly after they advanced to the Spanish League semifinals.
Baskonia was then eliminated by Valencia (currently leading in the Finals 2-1 vs Real Madrid) despite owning the home court advantage.
As EL Mundo reports, while Alonso reached some targets set by the management when they agreed to a deal, there have been some key differences between the two sides throughout the season. The failure to reach the Finals was just the last straw that opened Alonso the exit door.
Baskonia will be looking for a new head coach and one of the candidates is team legend Pablo Prigioni.
