Unicaja Malaga and Alberto Diaz have signed a contract extension that will keep the playmaker at the club until the end of the 2020-21 season.
Diaz (1.88 meters, 23 years old) was under contract until the end of next season, but this new deal will keep him with his boyhood club for three more years. He averaged 4.2 points and 2.1 assists in 22 7DAYS EuroCup games last season, but boosted his numbers to 7.3 points on 57.1% three-point shooting and 3.0 assists in the finals to lead Unicaja to the title – the club’s first European trophy since 2001- and earn Finals MVP honors.
He has previous EuroLeague experience; he averaged 2.0 points and 1.1 assists in 25 games with Unicaja. Born in Malaga, Diaz started his career with Unicaja affiliate Clinicas Rincon and also played for Bilbao Basket and Baloncesto Fuenlabrada before returning to Unicaja.
Diaz has also been a member of the Spanish youth national teams and was a member of the squad that won a silver medal at the 2010 U20 European Championships.
Unicaja has already re-signed or extended four other players – Nemanja Nedovic, Jeff Brooks, Dani Diez and Carlos Suarez, ensuring that the core of its EuroCup-winning squad competes together in the 2016-17 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.
