Pero Antic’s return to Crvena Zvezda is nothing less than a homecoming. Not only because he previously played there from 2005 to 2007 but also because he never hid the fact that he’s a big fan of the club.
In an interview for Red Star’s official website, the three-time EuroLeague champion spoke about why he chose to continue his career in the Serbian team, denying higher offers and not burdening the club with further expenses since Fenerbahce is paying an important part of his salary.
“The management of Fenerbahce was looking for the best solution for me. I had a guaranteed contract but also a dilemma: Whether to stay and enjoy this rich contract, or play and be happy somewhere else. When Red Star appeared, I didn’t think about it for even a second. It was a deal. I could have gotten a better deal and five times more money in China. But I always wanted to play for Red Star. It coincided. I saw that it was a real project and I can help. I’m not a financial burden for my club because Fenerbahce pays much of that contract. Also, I don’t take the spot of a foreigner.”
Antic also added, “The sums that are mentioned about my transfer are ridiculous! I’m among the cheapest players in this team! I haven’t come here to make money. I repeat: Fenerbahce covers most of my contract. I gave up some bonuses. I’m not here to earn but to help my Red Star if I can. I’m home!”
