Alexey Shved scored 14 out of his 20 points in the last five minutes, helping Khimki Moscow overcome Baskonia 91 – 90 at home and register its fifth victory in six games of the EuroLeague regular season.
Baskonia, that even led by double figures (32-42) late in the first half, thanks to Matt Janning (19 points season-high) and an overall fiery performance from beyond the arc (16/36 3s) went cold in a crucial moment of the fourth period while its opponents turned on their engines to ultimately win the match.
With the score 62 – 67 early in the fourth period, Khimki made a 14 – 5 counterattack that led to a 76 – 71 advantage with four minutes remaining. Then Shved scored six points in a row for the 85 – 78 but it was still not enough.
Baskonia made it a one-possession game when Janning won a foul at a 3-point attempt, banking all his shots for the 86 – 85 with 16 seconds left. Everything went one for grabs but Khimki players were perfect from the line to retain their lead.
Team work: Anthony Gill had a season-high 20 points plus seven rebounds for Khimki while James Anderson added 20 points too and Stefan Markovic 15.
For Baskonia that fell to a 1-5 record, Johannes Voigtmann and Tornike Shengelia scored 14 points apiece. Vincent Poirier posted a season-high 12 points and Jayson Granger 4 plus a season-high 11 assists.
