On the back of a hellish 36 – 17 first quarter, Baskonia grabbed one of its biggest victories in history after brutalizing Real Madrid 105 – 75 at home for round 7 of the EuroLeague regular season.
Marcelinho Huertas had a game-high 20 in PIR after scoring 13 points and dishing out six assists. Rodrigue Beaubois dropped 15 points, Jayson Granger 12 plus five assists, Matt Janning 11 and Janis Timma 10 for a Baskonia squad that grabbed the aforementioned early advantage by entering with 8/12 3s.
The 30-point deficit marks the biggest defeat Real has suffered in the modern (post-2000) EuroLeague era. Luka Doncic had 18 points and 6 rebounds while Walter Tavares scored 10 and grabbed 7 rebounds in his EuroLeague debut.
As one can easily guess, this was a night to remember by both teams yet for quite different reasons. En route to improving their record to 2 – 5, the Basques tied the second-best 1st half scoring performance in the history of the competition by dropping no less than 64 points on their opponents.
Real managed 44 points at the break, a pretty fine number, but one that didn’t do them any good after allowing the opposing offense to have its way so easily. There was no turnaround from such deficit, especially since the”Blancos” kept being sloppy on defense and hasty on the other. They ultimately sustained their third EuroLeague loss in a row, falling to 4-3.
