On Day 10 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul defeated 69-83 Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz on the road and secured its seventh win this season (7-3) while the home side slipped to a 4-6 record.
Obradovic’s team had six players in double-digits. Jan Vesely scored 10 points and handed out a career-high 6 assists, while James Nunnally put up 14. Luigi Datome (14pts), Kostas Sloukas (14pts), Brad Wannamaker (11pts) and Nicolo Melli (10pts) added double-digits.
The key: Despite being down ten points in the first quarter, Fenerbahce came back in the second period with a 12-26 score and went up ahead by four points at the half.
In a physical and competitive first quarter, Baskonia with Timma leading the way managed to go on a late first quarter 11-0 run and increase its lead to ten points (25-15).
The second quarter was spectacular to watch with great dunks and highlight plays from both teams. With a 4-13 run, however, the visitors cut the lead down to just one point (29-28) with Vesely and Nunally scoring and forcing coach Martinez to call a time-out. Fenerbahce’s ‘hot hand’ continued on offense and so the first half ended 37-41 in favor of the Turkish side.
The visiting side had control of the game in the second half as Obradovic’s team increased its lead to nine points (41-50) in the early third quarter. Since that point, the defending EuroLeague champions did not look back and even went up ahead by 15 points (51-66).
Finally, in the last ten minutes of the contest, Istanbul’s team kept this double-digit lead and finished the game off strong.
Not enough: For Baskonia, Tornike Shengelia scored 16 points.
