Injuries are commonplace in the EuroLeague, especially with the increased commitments, but the Lithuanian forward’s course shows exactly the opposite.
On Thursday night (07/12), Jankunas will play for the 92nd consecutive time in the competition, resuming a run that started in March 2014 and which continues to this day. It will be interesting to see if that’s the case, or if this will be the night that his streak will break because of a minor foot injury which is bothering him the last few days.
So what if he’s 34 years old? Zalgiris’s experienced power forward is not concerned with age and is always ready to help his coach, Sarunas Jasikevicius, and his teammates.
As it makes perfect sense, he’s in 6th place on the list with the most appearances (272) and it’s only a matter of time before he surpasses Dimitris Diamantidis (278) and Ioannis Bourousis (282). As for scoring, a short time ago Jankunas surpassed Batiste and Diamantidis, and, with 2591 points, he’s going after Reyes (2687) and Marcus Brown (2739) who are in 5th and 4th place respectively.
This goal seems attainable if one considers that Zalgiris’s captain is scoring more than ever, with 12.9 points on average this season. He’s certainly one of those players who deserve special attention, both in terms of his game but also from a statistical point of view.
