Dubljevic snaps Valencia’s losing streak

Valencia Basket snapped its ten games losing streak with a 67-63 win over Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens. With 30 seconds remaining Bojan Dubljevic hit the go-ahead game-winner and the Spanish side won its fourth game this year after 10 defeats in a row.

The last three minutes: Aaron Doornekamp made two clutch three-point shots, to put Valencia up by 3 (63-60), but Matt Lojeski shot a three-pointer with 1:42 minutes left to tie the game. With 36 seconds on the clock, Bojan Dubljevic scored a lay-up and the home-side regained the lead (65-63). Justin Denmon missed a crucial three-point shot with 29 seconds, Valencia secured the rebound, but Rivers stole the ball. In the final possession, KC missed the lay-up and Valencia prevailed with two free-throws from Erick Green.

The key: Every time Panathinaikos built a double-digit lead, Valencia responded with a run of its own and tied the game.

The game: With a 0-7 run in just the first minute, Pascual’s team forced coach Vidorreta to call an early time-out. Valencia, however, responded with a 10-3 run tying the game at 10. In the second period, the visitors established a double-digit (12-23) lead but once again with Pleiss (11 pts) and Green (13 pts) leading the way Valencia tied the game at 28. The first half ended 32-32.

The game remained competitive in the second half as both teams played physical (Valencia: five fouls in four minutes) and tough defense. With a 0-13 run, PAO went up ahead by ten points (36-46). It was Valencia’s time to go on a 10-0 run and tie the game for the third time with PAO scoring just two points in 3:30 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, both squad played it out until the end but in the last minute, the home team prevailed.

The star: For the winners, Erick Green finished with 21 points but it was Doornekamp (8 pts)  and Dubljevic (11 pts) with some clutch shots down the stretch.

Not enough: Chris Singleton filled the stat-sheet scoring 9 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, while also putting up five steals and three blocks.
