Despite a slow start, Unicaja Malaga managed to return in the game, then push back Barcelona’s own comeback rally and win 95-91 in the Round 27 of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

It was a two-point lead for Unicaja with 40 seconds left on the clock, and although they missed two times, it was their great offensive rebounding that got them back the ball twice, forcing Barcelona to foul. Both teams were perfect in the free throw finish with the hosts leaving the court with a win.

Daniel Diez was the hero of the game for Unicaja as he scored a career-high 21 points and added five boards and four assists. He was shooting perfectly during the first half and his first miss was later in the third period. He got some help from Nemanja Nedovic who scored 13 points.

On the other side, Ante Tomic recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

The game started great for Barcelona. They hit four shots from behind the arc to create a double-digit lead (17-5) already at the five-minute mark and, for a moment, it looked like this might their second blowout victory in a row after the triumph over Olympiacos. But the hosts didn’t allow it. After a timeout, Unicaja showed more energy, they improved defensively forcing turnovers (six steals) and scoring fast down the court. That rhythm kept going throughout the second period and they were able to come back and lead at the break 49-46.

It was a very effective fast-paced third period with a ‘Run ‘n Gun’ playstyle which turned out better for Unicaja as they won it (27-22) and increased their lead to eight points with ten minutes left. Although the match later became a one-possession game, they kept a cool head and managed to bring the game to an end.

Both teams are out of the playoff picture. Unicaja is currently with an 11-16 record while Barcelona is behind with a 9-18.
