Giannakopoulos wanted to be able to be present in his team’s games and near the end of the meeting asked for the rest of the clubs to lift the ban imposed on him by the competition’s judge.
As the EuroLeague press release explains, Giannakopoulos “requested the other ECA Shareholders present to instruct the Euroleague Basketball CEO to amnesty the arena prohibition sanction that is currently in place”. In theory, a vote of the shareholders can’t result in an amnesty of any kind, however, the board agreed to Giannakopoulos demand and all the teams spoke on the matter, one by one.
Nobody agreed with Giannakopoulos and especially Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv longtime president and old friend of Giannakopoulos family, Simon Mizrahi, used harsh words.
After all the other teams talked, Giannakopoulos left the meeting prior to its conclusion and posted on Instagram that Panathinaikos is leaving.
