Maccabi Tel Aviv GM and former player Nikola Vujcic revealed that Zalgiris Kaunas head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius has been in the agenda of the Israeli club.
“We’ve been wanting Saras for a long time,” Vujcic said in an interview for Lithuanian website 15Min. “We’ve been wanting him since the beginning of his career.”
Back in 2004 and 2005, Vujcic and Jasikevicius won the EuroLeague back-to-back titles with the jersey of Maccabi. The two players formed quite a duo on the floor and, according to Vujcic, it’s not a far-fetched scenario that they will work together in Maccabi, from different posts this time.
“Let’s see how things will turn out in the future. Saras is a legend of Maccabi and in the future, we would really like to have him. It’s true, now we have our own coach,” Vujcic added.
Regarding the plan of Maccabi to use two different rosters next season, one for EuroLeague and the other for the domestic competitions, Vujcic commented the following:
“We are certain that we will have two teams. It’s very important for EuroLeague, so we want to play with the best team there. And there are so many rules in the Israeli League that it’s impossible to have a competitive team both in Euroleague and in Israel,” Vujcic mentioned.
“If we win the EuroLeague I have no doubt that other teams will do the same. But it’s a revolutionary solution. Something that no one has ever done before. So there are things that can’t be predicted. We are thinking of solutions, but we know one thing: We cannot succeed in both tournaments with one team,” Vujcic also said.
