Less than a week ago (20/5), Real Madrid won the illustrious “Decima”, the tenth EuroLeague title in the history of the franchise. The Euroleague crown combined with Saturday’s (26/5) 3-1 victory of the football team against Liverpool in the Champions League Final, wrote a truly unique page in the sports annals.
Tonight, Real Madrid became the first club to ever win the EuroLeague (or European Champions’ Cup, if you will) and Champions League in the same year. An unprecedented accomplishment that speaks volumes of how successful the franchise is in the two most popular team sports in Europe.
The “Blancos” had previously come close to achieving two times in the recent history of the club. In 2014, Real fell to Maccabi Tel Aviv in an exciting Euroleague Final overtime thriller 98 – 86, few days before the football department celebrated the “Decima” by beating Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the extra 30 minutes of the Champions League title game.
In 2015, the basketball team went all the way to win the EuroLeague in Madrid breaking a 20-year drought, but their football peers were eliminated by Juventus in the Champions League semifinals.
This season, however, both the basketball and football teams made history by winning the top titles a club can win in Europe.
