Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim confirmed that Turkish major multi-industry conglomerate Dogus Group won’t be the sponsor of the basketball team during the next season.
“The rumors about Dogus Group stopping from being our sponsor are true,” Yildirim said during an interview with Turkish Bein Sports channel. “They have their own problems. They have some business problems. They are trying to solve those problems. They are talking with banks about this. Economic conditions in Turkey are getting tough. If they can solve those, we can continue.”
Last summer Fenerbahce and Dogus Group signed a three-year contract for the latter to become the main sponsor of the basketball department of the club. The deal included opt-out clauses for Dogus to exit the contract.
According to the agreement signed between the two sides, Fenerbahce was expected to receive 45 million euros during this three-year span. Yildirim also commented on how the club will cover the absence of these funds.
“If we are not going to elect (a president), there is no need for that. Because Mr. Ali (Koc) will find a solution anyway,” Yildirim said, mentioning Fenerbahce former board member and current presidential candidate Ali Koc.
