Gran Canaria has completed the necessary pre-registration procedures to join the EuroLeague for the 2018-2019 season, the Spanish club announced. It will be the first participation of the team in the top-tier European competition in the history of the club.
The team from Las Palmas gained a EuroLeague spot by advancing to the Spanish ACB League semifinals after winning the quarterfinal series vs. 2017 champions Valencia 2-1.
Per the agreement with ACB, the most successful team in each season, excluding the three clubs with closed contract (Barcelona, Baskonia and Real Madrid), gains access to EuroLeague. Since the latter all qualified to the semifinals, the EuroLeague ticket went to Gran Canaria.
14 out of the 16 teams of the 2018-2019 EuroLeague have already been set. There are two spots remaining. One will go to the German League champion (either Alba Berlin or Bayern Munich) and one to the VTB League champion (CSKA Moscow, Khimki Moscow, Unics Kazan or Zenit St. Petersburg), or finalist if CSKA Moscow wins the trophy in the upcoming Final Four.
