Speaking to Russian newspaper “Izvestia”, Sergio Scariolo, head coach of the Spanish selection, reflected on Sergio Rodriguez’ return to Europe and trusts in him to lead CSKA to a EuroLeague title.
Talking about Rodriguez’s decision to return to Europe after playing in the NBA, Scariolo mentioned: “Let’s start with the fact that Sergio is not a player that will take fast decisions. He was twice in the NBA and understands how it works. The first time he went there I think it was too early, but it was a great experience. When he returned to the NBA for the second time, he did it after weighing all the pros and cons, that’s for sure. Moreover, it must be understood that Chacho wanted to prove to himself and to others that he was ready to play overseas again. Of course, it is difficult for me to evaluate Sergio objectively. Everyone knows how much I love him, but I think that all the steps in his career were absolutely right. He will definitely win a Euroleague title with CSKA.”
As for the best point guard in Europe, Scariolo had to name plenty.
“This is a very difficult question because there are a lot of great players in this position. I will go with Nando de Colo, Sergio Rodriguez, Milos Theodosic, Ricky Rubio, Sergio Llull, Goran Dragic. Also, you can not disagree with the fact that Luka Doncic plays point guard when the ball is in his hands. Lately, it is very difficult to find a pure point guard for the reason that the players are divided according to another principle. You must quickly make a decision, have a good ball-handling, control your body and defend against a player who is bigger than you.”
