While there’s already a decision against Dimitris Giannakopoulos and Panathinaikos based on the referees’ report after the latest EuroLeague game against Olympiacos, according to Eurohoops sources, there’s no case about the accusations made for bribery.
The EuroLeague judge decided to dismiss the case without entering into its details because there was no concrete evidence about what was said and happened. Panathinaikos insists that everything is a plot created by Olympiacos and the Greens never accused the Reds about bribery, while Olympiacos not only appealed to the EuroLeague judge, but they also filed a lawsuit in Greek courts for the “slanderous official statement of Dimitris Giannakopoulos and Panathinaikos BC”, and the “reparation of the damage the club suffered due to the illegal behavior of the above sycophants.”
The decision about Giannakopoulos’ incident with the referees of the game against Olympiacos was a €30,000 fine against the club and Giannakopoulos and also the re-activation of the following fines, which date to the 2017-18 season, but had been suspended last October:
- €160.000 for public statements, made by Mr. Giannakopoulos last April 9 and 16, that endangered duly harmonious relationships among clubs and were detrimental to the sport of basketball in accordance with Article 24.1.g) of the Disciplinary Code.
- €250.000 for public statements made by Mr. Giannakopoulos last April 20 that endangered duly harmonious relationships among clubs and being detrimental to the sport of basketball in accordance with Article 24.1.g) of the Disciplinary Code.
Panathinaikos issued a press release on the matter of today’s decision. According to text “Panathinaikos OPAP welcomes the decision of the disciplinary body of Euroleague”. For Panathinaikos “this decision is a huge vindication for us, but also a victory against the lies and slander of Olympiacos“. Panathinaikos will also open a case against Olympiacos for slander in the Greek courts.
