Derrick Williams scored 21 points including the go-ahead 3-point play with 35 seconds remaining, as Bayern Munich defeated Olimpia Milano 78 – 80 on the road.
“It feels great. They are a very good team. We just fought all the way through. Until the last second. That’s what it takes in EuroLeague,” Williams said in his post-game flash interview. Thanks to his efforts (also six rebounds and a game-high 30 PIR) and what was essentially a game-winner, Bayern climbed to the playoff zone by improving to a 7 – 6 record.
Milano went up 78 – 74 with 67 seconds left to play thanks to a 3-pointer by Nemanja Nedovic. Bayern scored quickly after the timeout and then Williams made the basket and won the foul in transition to put his team ahead 78 – 79. The hosts had plenty of opportunities to win or tie the game but failed to connect to the basket.
Mike James had 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Milano but shot 5/18 from the field. Vladimir Micov added 16 points, Arturas Gudaitis 13 points and eight rebounds while Nedovic scored 11 in his return to EuroLeague action. Milano is now 6- 7.
Apart from Williams, Petteri Koponen scored 13 points while Stefan Jovic and Leon Radosevic had 10 points apiece.
