Rick Pitino confirmed that he’ll be the new head coach of Greek EuroLeague club Panathinaikos.
“Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! I want to thank Dimitris Giannakopoulos for the unique opportunity to coach Panathinaikos – great tradition. I’m fired up to help!” Pitino tweeted.

Drew Rosenhaus, Pitino’s agent, had told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that his client has agreed to a deal with the six-time EuroLeague champions but a few days ago, the coach himself said that he’ll have to discuss it with his family first. Now it seems that the Hall of Fame coach is Athens bound to take over the helm of the Greens.
Pitino is expected to make his debut with Panathinaikos in the upcoming EuroLeague game against CSKA Moscow Friday (28/12). He’ll return to coaching for the first time since 2017 when he was fired from Louisville following his alleged involvement with the 2017 NCAA corruption scandal case.
