Zalgiris Kaunas officially announced that the club parted ways with American guard Derrick Walton. The Lithuanian side also mentioned that there won’t be any transfer to replace the player.
Per Zalgiris Kaunas:
Zalgiris has reached a mutual agreement to part ways with 23-year-old point guard Derrick Walton Jr.
Having joined the team in October, the American played 15 games in the Betsafe-LKL, averaging 8.4 points, 4.4 assists and 3 rebounds. His EuroLeague stats were 4.6 points and 2.5 assists on a nightly basis.
Zalgiris director Paulius Motiejunas spoke highly of Derrick, thanking him for his hard work and dedication:
“Derrick is a young prospect and while he couldn’t quite fill our playbook properly, that does not diminish his potential. He helped us out a lot during our injury woes. He is a very strong player individually and if he finds a suitable situation, will definitely show everything he’s capable of. The offer was received from another club and we mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Derrick for all his efforts and the work put in and wish him all the best in his next career destination.”
Walton put up his best performance in a match-up against Pieno zvaigzdes, as he dropped 25 points in 20 minutes. He tallied double-digit efficiency in three of his EuroLeague games against Herbalife Gran Canaria, CSKA Moscow and Panathinaikos Athens.
Zalgiris does not intend to look for a replacement and will finish the season off with the current roster.
