Unics Kazan president Evgeny Bogachev stated that the Russian club will apply for a wild card in order to participate in the 2019-2020 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.
“We will apply for a EuroLeague wild card, Bogachev said to Russian outlet Izvestia.”And it’s difficult to say if they will make a choice in our favor. Much depends on the outcome of the German League.”
The German League champion gets a ticket to next season’s EuroLeague. If Bayern Munich, which already holds a license to play in 2019-2010 EuroLeague, wins the championship, then the finalist will receive a spot in the competition.
Bayern is currently up 2-0 over Rasta Vechta in the semifinals while 2018 EuroCup finalist Alba Berlin holds a 2-0 lead against EWE Oldenburg in the other semifinals matchup. Thus Alba is very close to grabbing one of the two remaining places for next season’s EuroLeague.
This will leave just one vacant spot for all wild-card-aspiring teams to fight over.
“If Unics doesn’t play in EuroLeague then the team will compete in EuroCup,” Bogachev confirmed. “We signed an agreement that in any case we will play in one of the Euroleague tournaments next season. We refused to participate in the FIBA Champions League.”
Serbian traditional power Partizan is also a EuroLeague wild card candidate.
