The ECA announcement that changes the allocation criteria for the non-guaranteed spots (by bringing back three wildcards from the 2020-21 season onwards plus much stricter financial rules) echoed within the basketball world in Europe. First, ACB reacted, firmly rejecting the model, and now the ULEB also stands against it with a statement made through social media.

ULEB’s statement reads:

“Following the ECA announcement of a new system of access to the Euroleague as from the 2020-2021 season, ULEB and its members have the following remarks. The new access system denies the fundamentals of the European sports system, namely qualification through the national championships based on sporting merits. Therefore ULEB strongly rejects the proposed system which also allows a high degree of randomness handing out five wildcards of which three annually”.
