Giannakopoulos: Not good for basketball that the same teams go to Final 4 because of their money

Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos talked about the major transfers that are taking place this summer in Europe and why EuroLeague should be stricter in implementing rules regarding Financial Fair Play.

Here’s what Giannakopoulos said during the presentation of PAO ALIVE, a project created for fans of the club to provide an economic boost to all departments of the organization.

“Basketball is on the rise in Europe overall. We’ve seen other teams also making very booming transfers. Building really powerful rosters. Budgets are constantly rising and this is one of the reasons why are doing this venture. For us to be able to follow these numbers in basketball.

From this point, some things must be put into αν order, like the part regarding Financial Fair Play (FFP). It’s not possible for some teams to have the capability to spend 40, 50, 60 million while they don’t have matching revenues. FFP clearly says that 65% of a budget must come from the same participation and 35% must come from revenues. As it seems, this isn’t kept and EuroLeague should be stricter in this part so that cοmpetiveness exists. I don’t think it does basketball any good that the same teams go to to the Final Four all the time because of the capability they have to spend more money. We see that other teams emerge and stand out in the NBA every two-three years. The same thing should be happening in European basketball.”
