Real Madrid is seriously considering cutting American forward Trey Thompkins from the roster once the reported signing of Tunisian center Salah Mejri becomes official, according to Mundo Deportivo’s Jose Ignacio Huguet.
Thompkins isn’t registered on the active roster of the team in either EuroLeague or Spanish ACB League. The arrival of Mejri would eliminate Thompkin’s chances of actually getting any playing time at all, since Real will have Edy Tavares and the Tunisian big at the “5”, Anthony Randolph, Jordan Mickey, Gabriel Deck as “4” options, plus youngster Usman Garuba (who already played in ACB this season) and captain Felipe Reyes for extra frontline solutions.
Real signed Thompkins in the 2015 offseason. Through four years with the club, Thompkins won the 2018 EuroLeague and ACB titles plus the 2016 Supercup. He was a key player in the 2018 EuroLeague Final against Fenerbahce Beko, with 10 points plus five boards, including a crucial offensive rebound and the basket that made it 83 – 78 with 18 seconds left to play.
Thompkins averaged 8.4 points, 3.6 rebounds in 17:21 minutes over 24 games in EuroLeague in 2018-2019. He’s a career 40.4% 3-pointer shooter (148/366) in EuroLeague.
