Valencia Basket emerged over LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne and grabbed an 81-72 victory at home in Round 6, their first for this Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

A tough contest between the two sides, with the French taking control of the first half. Valencia got back and took the lead in the second half but the game was far from over. With a little less than a minute to go, ASVEL trimmed the deficit to five points (75-70), though a pair of free throws by Vanja Marinkovic expanded the hosts’ lead once against and gave them a vantage point for the final seconds of the game.

“It was a difficult game for us. In the final quarter, we found a special moment [with the fans] in La Fonteta. We still had problems against some of ASVEL’s players, but what counts it’s the first victory”, commented coach Jaume Ponsarnau after the game.

Bojan Dubljevic led the winning side with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists across 27 minutes on the court, while Quino Colom posted 9 points and six assists.

The hosts took control of the game in the end, though they couldn’t stop ASVEL’s Livio Jean-Charles who had a game-high performance of 20 points and four rebounds.

ASVEL still solid

Six rounds in, ASVEL now stands at a 3-3 record, though coach Zvezdan Mitrovic is not too disappointed about the result, even if he excepts more from his team.

“I think it was an interesting game, we made a good effort and tried to control the game. But in the end I think the key was rebounding, in the last quarter, it was 13-2 in their advantage. It’s very difficult to play that way. They were more aggressive and attacked the ball, but I’m not disappointed. I think we played a good game”
