The 20th EuroLeague season is celebrated with the launch of the competition’s new campaign that merges two fantastic worlds, basketball and comics, to transform basketball heroes into aminated superheroes who take on a very special mission together.
Superheroes, mysterious forces, magnificent powers… there’s much of that in every Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game. The athletes on display often present outstanding and surprising abilities on the court and they are now ready to take their game to the next level and use their talents to put an end to a global threat that goes well beyond their interests or those of their teams. With this campaign, the EuroLeague winks towards the millions of comics and animated movie enthusiasts around the globe, a passion that is also shared in large numbers by many EuroLeague and basketball lovers.
The campaign was created by the Aftershare.TV agency and brought to life by comic book artist Fernando Blanco, who before creating the HeroLeague members also drew iconic characters such as Batman, The Avengers and Wolverine, among others, for major comic book publishers Marvel and DC.
The first episode of the series features Gigi Datome as Particle, Walter Tavares as The Wall, Kyle Hines as Twister, Tornike Shengelia as Multiple, Vladimir Lucic as Telepath, Vladimir Micov as Dragon Eye, Shane Larkin as Thunderbolt, Tarik Black as The Bulk, Marius Grigonis as Feline, Nikola Mirotic as Mutant, Vassilis Spanoulis as The Mentalist, Nick Calathes as Tempus, Luke Sikma as Silent, Gustavo Ayon as Titan, Bojan Dubljevic as Hybrid, James Gist as Fireball and Alexey Shved as Wiz. Leading the team on their mission to save the earth from a disastrous end is a very special coach who has taken the responsibility of bringing them together: Tony Parker, aka. The Master.
The storyline and the characters of HeroLeague circle around values that are inherent to and permanently embraced by Euroleague Basketball, its clubs and its players and coaches as those of effort, respect, teamwork, bravery, and – above all – passion, a value that transcends basketball and sports as an engine for progress. And when it comes to passion, no one knows better than Turkish Airlines EuroLeague fans.
“We hope that the fans enjoy this series and their basketball heroes being transformed into superheroes. We wanted to move away from ‘the usual’ and present them with something new and surprising and I believe this series will achieve that,” said Alex Ferrer Kristjansson, Marketing and Communication Senior Director at Euroleague Basketball. “If you look at all-time box office sales worldwide, four of the top 10 movies are superhero franchises. Of course, basketball fans are no exception and when looking at their interests, comics and animation rank very high. Finally, heroes are role models, just like many of the stars in the EuroLeague are. It just made perfect sense to create our own HeroLeague team!”
