Valencia Basket’s Guillem Vives found net from the three-point line against Crvena Zvezda with 3:50 to go in the final quarter of Thursday’s game, though the shot got canceled by the referees.
Later on, EuroLeague Basketball cleared out the situation and validated Vives’ three-pointer that, as stated, was wrongly cancelled.
Per the statement on euroleague.net:
Following speculation surrounding a canceled 3-point field goal during the fourth quarter of the Crvena Zvzeda mts Belgrade-Valencia Basket game played on November 28 2019, Euroleague Basketball’s findings are:
In the fourth quarter with 3:50 left on the game clock, Guillem Vives of Valencia Basket scored a 3-point field goal. As per Article 23.1.2. (Player out-of-bounds and ball out-of-bounds) of the FIBA Official Basketball Rules 2018:
The ball is out-of-bounds when it touches:
• A player or any other person who is out-of-bounds.
• The floor or any object above, on or outside the boundary line.
• The backboard supports, the back of the backboards or any object above the playing court.
Therefore despite the fact the ball bounced off the rim, then the top of the backboard before then passing through the basket, the ball remained inbounds at all times prior to entering the basket from above and passing through the basket entirely. The referees incorrectly cancelled the score, as the 3-point field goal should have remained valid.
