Panathinaikos coach Rick Pitino first worked with a European team when he signed with the “Greens” in December 2018. And he came to appreciate European basketball so much that he considers it the “best” kind he has ever been part of.
“European basketball is the best basketball I’ve ever experienced in my life. The purest basketball. The built-in attacks, the way they keep on defense, the coaching,” Pitino said in an interview with Israeli website Walla. The Hall of Fame coach had previously characterized the game in EuroLeague as “the closest to what people called basketball.”
Regarding the evolution of the game in the NBA, Pitino mentioned the following: “It [NBA] has changed in recent years, and became an all-star competition in every game. Last night I talked on the phone with my son, and he said the same thing.”
Pitino is currently in his second stint with Panathinaikos.
