After the 10th of November 2015, Alexander Vezenkov became a Greek citizen. The official state decision was published, and the only thing remaining for him in order to get a Greek passport is to give the Greek citizenship oath.
It’s a process that had started when he was still a member of Aris BC and the big question for him now is if he will also ask to change basketball nationality and play for the Greek national team. Even if he has played many times for the Bulgarian national team, the Greek federation and the player can apply to FIBA in order for him to become a member of the Greek national team.
This is not usual, but there are exceptions to the rule which doesn’t permit to a player to change national teams if he had already decide to play for one. The most recent is the case of Anton Gavel who played for Germany in Eurobasket 2015, even if for years he was a member of the Slovak national team. However in order for the process to start, Vezenkov himself would have to decide to change basketball nationality.
