Vassilis Spanoulis, Dimitris Diamantidis, Thodoris Papaloukas. You all know them as iconic Euroleague players who have won numerous titles and have all been named Season MVPs. Yet none of them ever came close to having the numbers that Ioannis Bourousis produces this year in the competition, wearing the jersey of Laboral Kutxa.
The international Greek center has found a “basketball heaven” in Vitoria, in what is arguably the best season in a career that has spanned for 14 years, so far, on Euroleague level. No other Greek player has ever had such big numbers in Ranking during the modern age Euroleague (post 2000).
Of course, none of the three guards mentioned above (Diamantidis, Papaloukas, Spanoulis) was a part of a team completely focused on them, or playing the basketball that Laboral Kutxa performs this year. On the contrary, they all had lots of stars beside them in Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, CSKA, who shared their efforts and the numbers from the evaluation system.
Bourousis averages 13.7 points and is the best rebounder in the competition, by grabbing 9.3 per match. Meanwhile, he dishes 2.1 assists and wins 4.4. fouls in each game. Quite the numbers that are translated into an average of 21.44 points in the evaluation system. The second best record in the competition with only Nando De Colo, of CSKA Moscow, being higher (23.21 Ranking Points).
Here is the table with the Top 10 performances by a Greek player in Euroleague:
