Giorgos Vasilakopoulos, president of the Greek basketball federation and former president of FIBA Europe back in 2001, when Euroleague was first created in its current form, reacted to the open letter of Euroleague with the following statement.
The audacity and sovereignty of distortion and falsehood is surprising in the unprecedented notice of one of the companies that organize and distribute with opaque criteria the European competition at club level, Euroleague.
The insolence and ignorance to argue that sport is a “free pursuit”, meaning that it’s a… unfenced vineyard.
How then is justified the practice of signing ten-year contracts with clauses millions of euros?
How justified are blackmails and pressures?
All that may be the subject of another proceeding. I would like to emphasize that sport is a social commodity and not a mere commercial transaction. It has rules, values and positions and it should be organized according to them, its creates all those principles which we are all obligated to respect and to adhere for the good of the whole and not to improvise and be preceded by personal financial interests.
That’s a first response to these gentlemen who are now running out of sense of respect and contact with the truth and the reality. Their press releases are monuments of audacity and arrogance.
