The brother of the late Drazen Petrovic, Alexander Petrovic is officially the new coach of the Croatian national team and he will lead it in the pre-Olympic tournament of Turin in search of an Olympic birth.
However, the mood in today’s press conference on the matter was peculiar. Petrovic who is currently the vice-president of Cibona Zagreb, hasn’t been a coach since 2014 when he was sitting on the bench of Lithuanian club Lietuvos Rytas.
Former NBA player, Dino Radja, who is the head of the experts committee which had the task to appoint a new coach, admitted that the federation also called Atlanta Hawks‘ assistant Neven Spahija, to offer him the position. However, Spahija denied the offer, saying that the federation remembered him too late. The team was left without a coach when Velimir Perasovic, who is also currently the coach of Laboral Kutxa, was not able due to keep his job due to the rules of the Spanish league.
As Radja said: “We called Spahija and he took a shit on us, but we just became wiser after this event”.
