It’s usual for a club to let a coach go, but this time things where different. As it was announced last night, Aito Garcia Reneses, a legend of Spanish coaching, decided to leave Gran Canaria.
After two seasons with the club, which wanted to keep him, Reneses decided it was time for him to go. As he said in his farewell press conference: “Two years ago I had many fears, such as how to improve a team with so many road trips (ed.note: due to the location of the Canary Islands) and also because the move of the team to the new Gran Canaria Arena, but I think I have met expectations.”
“I’m very happy,” he explained, “but I think that two years is the right time to stay here. I have nothing planned for my future, maybe I take a sabbatical for one year or maybe five. I have no external reasons, I have just completed a great circle”.
This season Reneses, born in 1946, completed 50 seasons on the highest Spanish level of basketball.
