A season of upsets was completed in Israel with an unexpected champion. After beating the perennial champ Maccabi Tel Aviv in the semifinal, Maccabi Rishon prevailed in the final over the favorite, Hapoel Jerusalem (83-77).
Darryl Monrow with 29 points and Shawn Dawson with 21 led the charge in a close game which ended. This is the first championship title ever in the history of Maccabi Rishon and it’s obvious that the Final Four format helped the team of coach Arik Shivek, still this is more than a great achievement.
Maccabi Rishon finished 6th in the regular season standings, but managed to get all the way to the top. The team is expected to compete next season in FIBA’s Basketball champions league.
