On Saturday July 16, the annual council of the VTB United League will be held in order to determine the size, composition and the number of participants for the upcoming season.
As Russian Izvestia reported, the 2016/2017 VTB will be compiled by 14 clubs instead of 16 that participated last year. And that is because Nymburk (Czech Republic) Bisons Loimaa (Finland) and Vita Tbilisi (Georgia) will not take part in the competition.
Nymburk decided to withdraw because it will play in the Czech League as well as the FIBA Champions League so the workload would be greatly increased if it choose to take part in VTB too. For Bisons and VITA the withdrawal reasons have to do with financial matters.
VEF Riga (Latvia) and Astana (Kazakhstan), the two other Russian teams from last season’s VTB will continue playing in the competition. The 14th spot will be most likely covered by another Russian club, one among Krasnye Krylia, Ural Great Perm, or PSK Sakhalin.
