During the draw ceremony for the upcoming 2016/2017 Greek Basket League took place today in Thessaloniki it was revealed that a radical…. “innovation” is about be implemented in the post-season structure of the championship.
What are we talking about?
Until now, the first eight teams in the standings after the end of the regular season, gained the right to participate in the playoffs. Same thing as in every European domestic, and not only, league.
But this will change from the upcoming season on.
Instead of eight, the teams that will enter the playoffs will be six. Yes, six. How will this happen?
The first two teams in the standings immediately advance to the semifinals. There they will wait for their opponents which will emerge from “best of five” quarterfinals series that the rest of the teams will play.
According to the president of the league, Michalis Melis, the decision was taken in order to simultaneously increase the number of the games and their interest.
When it comes to the draw, the Greek Clasico between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos will be played in Day 2 (15-17 October). The Reds will be hosting their arch-rivals in Piraeus.
Even though the league consists of 14 clubs, 13 team names entered the draw plus a “Team A” representing the fourteenth team which will be known next week.
