Tony Parker couldn’t help but “laugh” when he heard former president of France Nicolas Sarkozy say that “once you are French your ancestors are the Gauls.”
This statement, which was directed to migrants, spawned much controversy in France, and not only. It didn’t come out of nowhere though since Sarkozy hopes to be a presidential candidate for the 2017 elections.
It’s not hard to understand why the San Antonio Spurs superstar reacted the way he did to these words. “It made me laugh more than anything else. Well, I was born in Belgium from a Dutch mother and an American father. So I am the perfect example of the fact that French may come from anywhere,” he commented for the French RTL Radio.
Parker definitely doesn’t need to research his genealogical tree in order to confirm his… “French-iness”. Nor deny his heritage. Whatever that might be. After all, he has honored the “Bleus” in the best possible way throughout his career.
“It was always important for me to play for France because I’m very proud to be French. You don’t need to be born in France to consider yourself French. You show it with your actions. And I think that’s what I did with the national team.”
