Janis Timma scored 20 out of his 33 points in the second half to lead a Stefan Markovic-less Zenit St. Petersburg in a comeback 82 – 72 victory over Unicaja Malaga for the last week of the Eurocup regular season.
The Russian team, that was trailing 38 – 49 a bit after halftime, secured first place in Group C while their opponents fell to the fourth spot of the standings.
With Jamar Smith (19 points, 3 steals) dropping buckets, Unicaja Malaga had managed to overpower its hosts during the first two halves, but then completely crumbled, producing only 26 points in the last 19 minutes of the game.
On the other side, Timma was simply unstoppable (33 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks) and with the help of Aaron White (12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists) and Ryan Toolson (12 points, 4 assists) helped his team get back on track, first tying the score 53 – 53 at the end of the third quarter and then establishing a lead at the mid of the fourth period for the remainder of the match.
