Zenit St. Petersburg got its first win in Group G of Eurocup’s Top16 (1-1) over Lietuvos Rytas, which tried but couldn’t get the job done in Moscow against an amazing game by Janis Timma.
The final score was 88-79 for Zenit and Lietuvos with a 0-2 record so far is already with its back on the wall.
Despite a 27-16 start for the Russians, the guests trailed by 3 points at half time (43-40), tied the score at 52 in the 27th minute, but Zenit kept things under control. The hosts closed the third quarter with a 62-53 lead after a 10-1 run and never looked back after that. Timma finished the game with 27 points on 5/9 threes, Pavel Sergeev (photo) added 14 points and Kyle Landry had 13.
For the losing side Drew Gordon scored 16, Corey Fisher added 15 points and Rokas Giedraitis had 10 but without a big production by David Logan (7 p.), they just couldn’t keep up with Zenit.
