AEK president Makis Aggelopoulos commented on the Basketball Champions League opting to conclude the 2019-2020 season with a Final Eight held in September by characterizing the decision as “optimistic, viable and realistic.”

“Humanity is experiencing difficult situations due to the pandemic. Health must come first and foremost for everyone who’s involved in basketball and society in general. The Basketball Champions League teleconference was held with this stake. The most optimistic, realistic and viable solution was given,” Aggelopoulos said in an official statement.

Aggelopoulos was reported to bring the idea of a Final Eight on the table during the teleconference meeting with most clubs agreeing to the proposal.

“It doesn’t matter who suggested what,” Aggelopoulos mentioned. “The credit belongs to BCL. All executives took into account the facts, exchanged opinions and the league management took this decision by showing unprecedented reflexes. It’s a decision that creates prospect and hope and is a compass for the whole of European sports. Through this dark tunnel, we showed that there is a light somewhere. There should be a 2020 European champion. In a real celebration for the sport, with fans from all teams in the stands, at the beginning of the new season and not in suffocating time frame.”

AEK was the Basketball Champions League champion in 2018.
